The Red Sox are in a harder division and they still have a better record. The Twins didn’t seem to be doing all that well for the month or so before Morneau went out. Luckily, this is the Central and so there is always hope. Unfortunately I think my hopes were too high starting this season. I was hoping for a little more that just the Central.

The Red Sox haven’t had it a whole lot tougher as far as injuries go, considering we lost both of our middle infielders at the same time, Justin Morneau our former MVP, best hitter, and clubhouse leader is injured, and in the bullpen Pat Neshek and our All-Star closer are all out. Not to mention it is becoming more and more obvious that Mauer has been playing hurt most of the year. Beyond that, I don’t really see how the Red Sox schedule is relevant to this discussion.

But you are right that excuses don’t get it done. Every team has injuries and players that don’t perform up to expectations, but it’s a mistake to try to be a team you’re not to make up for it. You play as tough as you can and battle through it. In the past that has been one of the strengths of Twins teams, and hopefully they will show that it still is.

This team only leads the league in excuses. Go cry to the Red Sox about the injuries and tougher schedules. I’ve heard of constructive criticism but never constructive excuse making. This team started out as a shell and weren’t playing particularly well even when they were winning. I could hardly wait to see what would happen when they started hitting on all cylinders, but I guess they only had that one stroke engine.

I can’t believe Valencia isn’t up in the league. He plays solid defense and his offense is better than Punto’s. Valencia is the future of the twins and I don’t understand why they are not grooming him now. He should be getting his feet wet in the Majors now. The twins need to look toward the future and they should start now.

I don’t mean to suggest they got the idea from me at all, but it’s just interesting that there are finally some sources that seem to be interpreting things a bit more coolly and, IMO, rationally.

Great article, David. You definitely brought up some great points here that I bet many people would have never considered (myself included), such as…

1. Twins are slow negotiators.
2. Mauer wanted the team to not let his contract talks prevent the team from making other moves.

..and what I think is the biggest one that no one has considered…

3. With Mauer’s impending contract, the team wants cost certainty with the payroll for future years, which is why they’ve given new contracts to Blackburn, Span, and I suppose Harris as well.

Well said. Very interesting read. Thanks for putting the time into such an in depth piece. They will lock him down, they have to. I would be a media relations disaster if they don’t get this done. I just don’t believe Joe would rake the Twins over the coals for every last penny.

Glad to see I am not the only one irked by Souhan’s columns. Some fans read everthing in Souhan’s column as gospel and are throwing Mauer under the bus. I don’t believe anything Slouhan says if it is not backed up by the real beat writes Lavelle Neal and Christenson
