Andrew – I’ve heard a couple other people kicking the third point around today. Craig Calcaterra mused about it at CTB this morning, and at Twinkie Town, Jesse proposed the same thing. (You can check it out here http://www.twinkietown.com/2010/3/14/1372278/more-than-meets-the-eye-ii-twins)

I don’t mean to suggest they got the idea from me at all, but it’s just interesting that there are finally some sources that seem to be interpreting things a bit more coolly and, IMO, rationally.

Great article, David. You definitely brought up some great points here that I bet many people would have never considered (myself included), such as…

1. Twins are slow negotiators.
2. Mauer wanted the team to not let his contract talks prevent the team from making other moves.

..and what I think is the biggest one that no one has considered…

3. With Mauer’s impending contract, the team wants cost certainty with the payroll for future years, which is why they’ve given new contracts to Blackburn, Span, and I suppose Harris as well.

Well said. Very interesting read. Thanks for putting the time into such an in depth piece. They will lock him down, they have to. I would be a media relations disaster if they don’t get this done. I just don’t believe Joe would rake the Twins over the coals for every last penny.

Glad to see I am not the only one irked by Souhan’s columns. Some fans read everthing in Souhan’s column as gospel and are throwing Mauer under the bus. I don’t believe anything Slouhan says if it is not backed up by the real beat writes Lavelle Neal and Christenson
