• According to Jake Mauer, manager of the GCL Twins, Joe Mauer is still fighting off the lingering effects of a cold. As the elder Mauer told Sports Headliners on Tuesday, Joe has been suffering from this festering illness for “two weeks” and has been noticeably “slowed down.”

We’ve certainly noticed that “slowing down,” haven’t we?

  • Also, the elder Mauer said the younger Mauer would be spending over $1,500 on each of the 17 family members he plans to invite to the All-Star Game next month. (For those who aren’t as good with fast math – that’s over $25,500. That may seem like a lot, but it isn’t even 1/411 of what Mauer is making this year.)
  • Baseball Musings did a breakdown of Mauer’s chances to finish the season with an average over .400 a few weeks ago, and came away with mixed results. Depending on where you “start” Mauer’s season, he either has a 1-in-50 or 1-in-280 chance.

Around that same time the Wall-Street Journal asked some professional number-crunchers their take on Mauer’s season. Again, depending on whether you count the month of April Mauer has either a 27 to 1 or 112 to 1 chance to finish the season with a .400 batting average or better.

After this most recent bout with the flu, I’m sure those odds have gone down considerably.  Let’s hope his roommate Morneau is allowing him his much-needed rest.
